Not all residents who come to Homeplace intend to make it their long-term home, and there are many reasons for that.
One of the most common reasons is simple: the aging loved one’s caregiver needs a break. Sometimes caregivers start taking care of their loved one without truly knowing how much time and energy this job—and it is a job—will take. Add to that, many caregivers are still working a regular full-time job and then coming to their loved one’s home after. The hours add up, the stress increases, and sometimes, it can be overwhelming. If you’re a caregiver and just need a break, from a few days to a few weeks, let us know and we can work out a plan.
Another reason residents start a short-term stay is that they are beginning to realize they don’t need to be home alone and want to give our community a try to determine if we are the right place for them, a sort-of trial run. Again, we welcome these residents and hope they can jump in with both feet and find the activities, three home-cooked meals, and camaraderie to their liking.
Residents also come to us after a hospital stay. Many times, our elder loved ones need to go to the hospital after a fall or sickness. One common example is when a senior breaks a hip. Most likely, he will take part in in-patient therapy after the hospital stay and need further assistance when discharged. But, also likely is that at the time of discharge he isn’t ready to go home. We offer the opportunity for these residents to stay at Homeplace for that. When this happens, we set up a physical therapy plan by consulting with rehabilitation professionals. We don’t have physical therapists on our staff, so we coordinate with home health physical therapists, who come three to four times a week.
A short-term resident contract is set up on a daily rate. Terms, including costs and provided services, are discussed and agreed upon before the resident enters Homeplace. Throughout the stay, we keep in contact with the family to help monitor the level of care while also assessing the right time for short-term resident to return home.
No matter how long the stay, our residents become a part of our family. We encourage them to bring their personal items, such as favorite pillows and pictures to keep home in their heart, but we hope they interact with new friends and take part in all we can offer them. As with all our residents, we only want the best for our short-termers, if only for a few days or weeks.
