Without a doubt we want as many residents as possible to live with us here at Homeplace, but just as certain we want our community’s elderly loved ones to stay in their home and age in place for as long as possible. We know that’s what our loved ones want, and we know that living in the place where they raised and loved their families is best for their happiness and mental health. When it’s right for a loved one to move in with us, we hope that we can be the next place where they can age in place.
To stay at home as long as possible, a family must put in place measures and resources to keep their elderly loved one safe. That’s what we’ll be talking about at our next virtual dementia seminar, which will be from 6-7 p.m. on May 11. (See below for the sign-up link.)
Our guest speaker that night will be Barb Doss, who is a representative of Guardian Medical Monitoring. Doss will talk about some of the specific resources that Guardian Medical Monitoring provides that help an elderly person stay in their home longer.
Some of their products include a fall sensor and a medication dispenser. The auto fall sensor is a pendant that a person wears as a necklace. It can detect a fall when there’s high velocity movement toward the ground and then a sudden impact, according to a company pamphlet. When a fall is detected, an operator with the company can send help to the fallen.
The MedReady Medication Dispenser ensures that correct dosage is dispensed at the correct time. It remains locked to keep medications secure and if a medication is missed, the elderly loved one’s caregiver is notified.
These are just a couple of many company products and resources that Doss will speak about, all of which are safety measures that allow people to age in place longer.
As mentioned earlier, we want people to live at home as long as possible. But when that’s no longer an option, we want them to come to us. We have the staff, the community, outside resources and partnerships, and extracurricular activities to keep them happy and healthy—and safe!—while aging in place with us.
